Hi, I’m Leah Dailey and I am currently a junior at Mississippi State University. I am majoring in Broadcast Meteorology. I am from the small town of Fayette, Alabama. I love animals and am currently addicted to buying fish because I just got a new fish tank. If you’re thinking about getting one then beware! It will take over!
I love the weather and have been fascinated since a young age. I am excited that this year I will finally start learning about all its mysterious phenomena. It is mind-blowing at all the tiny details in such a large mass of information that make up the weather/ atmosphere. This field is not just focused on science but has a large portion of math that is intertwined. I just started Differential Equations and I am already very confused.
I like to stay very active in my field of study. I am currently a national and local member of the American Meteorological Society. Since my freshman year I have attended every Severe Storms Symposium that is held each spring. I have also completed a Severe Storms Spotter Training Course.
This summer, I enhanced my meteorological studies by getting hands on experience. I completed a three month internship for James Spann. He is the Chief Meteorologist at the abc 33/40 station in Birmingham, Alabama. I grew up watching James, so to intern for him was nothing less than a dream come true. I helped build his graphics for his 5:00 and 6:00 shows. I also wrote weather summaries for Jason Simpson to critique. Jason also taught me how to plat hydrographs, and shared information about soundings and the visible satellite. I also got to practice on the green screen with Ashley Brand. I got to spend time with all three meteorologists and interpret how their day can be. Since summer is hot and consistent in the south, I never got to experience a “severe weather day” at the station.
I soaked up so much information, even on those “boring” weather days. The last day of my internship, James, J.B. Elliot, Brian Peters, and Ashley Brand took the interns to lunch. That was my favorite time because I got to understand James and the crew as a person and not a meteorology icon. The advice I was given about future career decisions and life will never be forgotten.
As a semester long project I will be writing weekly blogs. These blogs are to inform you about the current weather or weather related events. You can also view my previous blogs that I wrote this summer at alabamawx.com and search Leah Dailey.

I just want to say that I am so proud of you for finding your dream and going for it. There have been a lot of times in your life when you could have taken a different path, but you didn't. I know you are going to do great things and you are going to be very successful. I hope that we are still friends when you are prancing across the screen telling me what the weather is going to be like. Good luck in everything this semester. I can't wait to read your next entry!!
