Severe Weather!

This has been an active day for severe weather. Severe thunderstorms have marched across the state of Mississippi and on into Alabama. Some of these thunderstorms are super cells, by that having a rotating updraft. These CAN produce tornadoes. A tornado was spotted and caught on video by MSU spotters passing by Twenty-One apartments around 1:00 P.M. just south of the Mississippi State University Campus. Currently, sirens can be heard throughout several counties in Alabama. These counties still remain under a tornado warning and will until 4:00 P.M. These include: Northwestern Green County, Southern Pickens County, and Northwestern Sumter County. The Central and Northern half of the state of Mississippi is under a tornado watch along with the Western half of Alabama. This watch will remain into effect until 11:00 P.M. So far no damage has been reported for the Starkville area. Minor tree and power line damage was reported for Haleyville, AL. The low pressure system still remains very organized so more intense weather could occur later tonight. Keep your weather radio at hand with new batteries and stayed tuned to your local news station for current updates. I am currently in the MSU climate lab keeping my eye on the radar. Remember, the safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture. If no basement is available then seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or closet. Use blankets or pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows.
